We've been keeping track.

“Sustainable” is easy to say. So we decided to count what we could: the materials in our books, the packaging in our shipments, and the plastic we have purposefully designed *out* of production along the way.

Since 2020, we’ve tracked our production and shipping records across every Hemlock & Oak book we bind and every order we pack. When a number was uncertain, we used the lower figure.

Sustainability by the numbers.

55km
of recycled ribbon, which is equivalent to stacking Mount Everest six times.
Recycled ribbon, never virgin
6,000
of plastic shrink wrap we never used... which is nearly four hockey rinks of film.
No factory shrink wrap, ever
1.36tonnes
of plastic bubble mailers we skipped, roughly equivalent to the weight of a car.
No plastic mailers, both ends
2,100
of shipping paper, all 100% recycled and equivalent to about eight tennis courts.
Zero virgin fibre
100%
of our covers are made with FSC-certified LENZING™ ECOVERO™ or sustainable rayon blends.
FSC-certified bookcloth

Updated June 2026. Every figure is counted straight from our own production and shipping records, then rounded down.

Just the receipts.

Every figure above comes from our own production and shipping records, then gets rounded down when there is uncertainty. We know the numbers don't make us perfect or impact-free. But we believe that if something is worth making, it should be made carefully. If better materials are available, we'll use them. When we can avoid unnecssary plastic, we choose that option, all while keeping your products beautiful, useful, and durable.
